NIGHTENGALE ROOM - KING

This room is located on the first floor of the Guest House.

One of the most talked about ships of her era, Nightingale was an extravagant yacht-like clipper ship. Built in 1851, she weighed 1060 tons and was 185 ft. long. Her maiden voyage was supposed to go from the United States to London for the World’s Fair, but her building process was delayed due to financial difficulties. After she was launched, she was towed to Boston and auctioned for $43,500. She finally set sail in April of 1852 and began her 42-year career. She later went into the Australian merchant trade, doing the passage in just 90 days.

The clipper ship “Noonday” was a medium-sized vessel measuring 200 feet long. She made four successful trips to San Francisco during her short career. In 1863, carrying $600,000 worth of cargo to San Francisco, she struck a rock. All crew members escaped on lifeboats before she sank in 240 feet of water. Not a very exciting career, but the name reflected the brightness and sunshine we find on the porch of Noonday’s room.

DASHING WAVE ROOM - KING

For a welcome change of pace from the typical hotel stay, reserve the Dashing Wave Room at Martin Hill Inn for your visit to Portsmouth, NH. Set at an angle at the end of the hall, the door to Dashing Wave beckons you in to see the various welcoming features of this room.

Dashing Wave was a medium-sized vessel, measuring 184 feet in length and weighing 1239 tons. She was built by Fernald and Petigrew and launched in 1853. Dashing Wave was the same model as Sea Witch, which was launched a few weeks before, and was sold to the same owners, the Steven Tilton Co. John D. Fiske was her first captain and left the Piscataqua for Boston in September and later went to San Francisco. In 1858, she made her best San Francisco journey in 108 days. Dashing Wave made six of these runs in total. Although her final official voyage was in the spring of 1902, she might have sailed as late as 1910. She was one of the last clipper ships used for any kind of sea going service.

This second-floor room is located in the Guest House and also features a private, en-suite bath with stall shower. The stairs leading to the second floor rooms, especially in the Guest House, are fairly steep. For guests who have trouble with stairs, we suggest booking a room on the first floor.

Not much is known about the ship Sea Witch, we just liked the name. We do know that she was launched a few weeks before Dashing Wave, and was sold to the same owners, the Steven Tilton Co. More information is available about a similar ship, Water Witch, depicted in the painting hung in the room. Water Witch weighed 1204 tons and measured 178 feet. She was built by Fernald and Petigrew and was sold to Steven Taylor of Boston. She launched in 1853, a few weeks before Dashing Wave (the ship whose namesake lives on in the room next to yours). Capt. Washington Plumer was her first commander. Her timbers were seasoned with sea salt to prevent fungus, which if this procedure was repeated on her sister ship, Dashing Wave, would account for Dashing Wave’s long-lasting hulls. She was primarily used to make runs to Latin America and up the east coast of America.
