Chowder Festival in Portsmouth’s Prescott Park

Every June, we encourage the guests of our Portsmouth bed and breakfast to line up early in Prescott Park for the 27th Annual WOKQ Chowder Festival to get the best of local chowders.  On Saturday, June 4, 2011, some 4,000 chowder lovers will descend on the grassy and shaded lawns of Prescott Park to enjoy some 500 gallons of chowder served up by Seacoast area restaurants.   The event starts at 11:30 and runs until the chowder is gone!  The event costs $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12.  Members of Prescott Park enter for free.

As you travel from booth to booth sampling everything from clam to scallop chowder, take notes because the restaurants are vying for the title of People’s Choice, Best Booth and Critic’s Choice.  Some chowders are creamy, some spicy, have clear broth or Manhattan style red.  For non-seafood people, alternative chowders such as corn or vegetarian round out the variety.

This year, the festival joins forces with the Piscataqua Waterfront Festival which will run from 1:00 until 4:00 pm.  So, you get two events for the price of one and enjoy a free boat ride, courtesy of Portsmouth Harbor Cruises, from Prescott Park to the Waterfront Festival at the Moffatt Ladd House.
